Writers are born, but successful writers are entrepreneurs. If you are pursuing traditional publishing you need a platform. Writing is a craft but publishing is a business.

If you are an indie publisher you will want to plan ahead for a book launch. We recommend the Secrets to a Successful Book Launch Toolkit.

Well worth the small investment.

Have any of you hired publicists and have they been effective? Have they also worked with you with your online presence? I am curious about this because I am now a micro publisher and have spoken with a few publicists about what they offer. One does…Continue

Good for you Rico.  I wrote and self-published my first book and there are a few things I would change about it but overall I am very happy with it.  Marketing is the tough piece, but two books have helped me tremendously.  Guerrilla Marketing for Writers, Jay Conrad and 1001 Ways to Market Your Books, John Kremer. My book came out in August and I'm still plugging away at it.

You already have some publicity behind you, well done!

First, I'm writing a book on my professional expertise in Physical Fitness, regarding the tragedies and triumphs of my disabled clients in wheelchairs. As a result of the media's huge interest in these inspiring stories, I won Trainer of the Year; appeared on ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX, and in newspapers; Metrx sponsored my talk radio show; and did motivational segments on Body by Jake's TV show.

My point is, in order to earn the media's trust, you first need a good, interesting  profession, product or book--preferably on a subject in which you are an expert--unless of course you're related to Oprah or Dr. Phil.

What I observe with most authors, is a distaste for promotion, a delusional perspective of their product, and an unwillingness to be critiqued--one lady said that everyone loved her book, and the only reason she didn't get media coverage, and her books didn't sell, was that her name wasn't John Gresham! The truth is, that her book was not professionally written, edited or designed.

We all need an extra pair of eyes to view our work--an editor, book designer, or book coach will transform an average book--into a good book--and your Aunt Tessie from Jersey City doesn't count as a book critic.

I also like the term, Authorpreneur…as it combines the two must-haves--the first is a passion to write, and the second is a willingness to do whatever it takes to ensure that your book will be a success. Get book reviews, get a celebrity endorsement, and do a lot of blogging. You can find all of these people online.
